Description
2nd millennium B.C. A large pillow-shaped tablet with plano-convex cross-section, bearing dense cuneiform text to both faces. Cf. Liverani, M., Antico Oriente, Storia, societa' ed economia, Roma, 1988, pp.608-609, fig.111, for similar writing style. 142 grams, 81 mm (3 1/8 in.). Specialised collection of cuneiform texts, the property of a London gentleman and housed in London before 1992. By descent to family members. Examined by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), historian, archaeologist, and specialist in Assyriology and Near Eastern archaeology, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This small collection is exceptional for the variety of types, including some very rare and well preserved examples. The accounting records of the time of the Kassite period stand out for exemplary clarity, and for the 'grid page' layout, which was innovative compared to the traditional column layout. [No Reserve]
