Germany, Cologne. 1730 Token (White Metal with an interesting "as made" central copper plug, 21mm, 5.4 grams). The obverse displays the arms of the city of Cologne; the reverse a goblet or chalice with the legend SIGNUM SENATORI (the Senate and the City). The edge is neatly lettered in relief CUM LAETITIA BIBITE (Drink with Joy). A lustrous, delicately toned BU with strong claims to the Choice category. This very intriguing token certainly deserves further research in order to more completely determine the reason for its minting. We were able to locate a handful of other appearances of such a token, but none were anywhere near the outstanding quality of the example offered here. Est. $40.
