Description
A Splendid, Wholly Satisfying "Tribute Penny". Ancient Rome, Empire. Tiberius (14-37 AD) Silver Denarius (3.84 grams). Rev. Livia (the mother of Tiberius) seated holding a sceptre and olive branch. A vibrant, well struck, nicely centered, easily EF/AU or better example with excellent color and surface quality. In fact, this specimen is among the most honest, aesthetically pleasing, and technically high grade Tribute Pennies that we have had the pleasure of handling, and collectors of Biblical-related coinage should certainly take notice of this fortuitous offering. The denarius of Tiberius has earned a particularly important place in history due to its scarcity and significance within the earthly ministry of Jesus. Tiberius was emperor when Jesus famously asked the Pharisees and Herodians that were trying to ensnare him to bring him a denarius. Jesus then asks them whose likeness was on the coin (i.e. the current emperor Tiberius). When they responded that Caesar's portrait was on the denarius (see Mark 12:13-17), Jesus then makes his memorable "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's and unto God that which is God's" quote. Est. $ 1500.
