Description
A carved wooden mask accented with mineral pigments. The Kumu carve the "Nsembu" mask for use by members of the Nkunda Secret Society for the purposes of adult initiation. They also use the mask for divination under the effects of hallucinogens. The mask itself represents the diviner’s spirit. Kumu peoples, DRC/Congo, central Africa. The mask itself measures 14.5 x 6.5 inches. A metal display stand can also be included for an additional $50.00. Provenance: Ex .Joseph Gerena Fine arts, NY, purchased prior to 1992
