Michael Morier (1938-2008, MI), Burnished Horse Hair Pottery, lot of (2) vases, glazed burnished ceramic with horsehair detailing from kiln firing process, 11"h x 11" diameter

Michael Morier's roommate, Ricardo ;Cheech; Marin, was an accomplished potter who first inspired Michael to try pottery himself in 1970. With this inspiration, Michael returned to Michigan and took up study in clay at Michigan State University, where he earned his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in clay arts under the tutelage of Louis Raynor. Morier then worked on a Navajo reservation in Sanders, Arizona and learned the burnishing technique that would shape the pottery for which he became renowned, horsehair pottery. His pots were thrown on the wheel in many beautiful shapes, hand burnished with agate, removed still hot from the kiln and decorated with horsehair, imprinting crisp lines of black and smoky sweeps of grey carbon on the unglazed pieces.
