Description
Queen Anne "Chest on stand". England, ca. 1710.
Japanese lacquered wood. Oak and pine case.
Two bodies.
Restorations. Some of the locks are missing. Defects in the handles.
Measurements: 155 x 108 x 61 cm.
The "Chest on stand" is a typically English piece of furniture made up of two bodies: an upper chest of drawers and a relatively high base, raised on legs. In this case, the two bodies differ in a subtle way, as the base is slightly wider than the upper chest of drawers. The cabinet stands on four legs with a slightly cabriole profile. The lower body houses three drawers, two of which are larger and have metal handles, and a smaller central drawer. The skirt has a serrated, mixtilinear profile. The upper body has three drawers that occupy the entire length of the front and two smaller drawers on the upper level. Each of the drawers has its own lock, with a keyhole that resembles a three-lobed vegetal motif. They also have handles. Finally, the upper body is topped by a simple, slightly stepped cornice. Made of lacquered wood, this English Queen Anne period chest-on-stand has a front with rich genre scenes of pagodas, landscapes, peasants, birds and vegetation inspired by traditional Japanese painting. The silver metal keyholes and handles also take the form of pagodas and traditional Chinese houses.
