Description
Published in Latin, 1493 by Schedel, Wilgemut and others. The expansive world history and Biblical paraphrase was a major undertaking and originally produced in Latin and German, and was one of the first publications with both text and illustration incorporated. This example contains 16 total pages, each double sided, as well as the creation of the world plate. Unusually, this version is bound in matching oil and lacquer cover boards which contain Persian decoration. Presumably a previous owner of this partial set had them bound in this manner. Text surrounds the cover board. There are two dealer labels: the oldest from "Papweterie Maquet", a luxury paper, stationary and book dealer in Paris, 19th century. It is not known whether they helped to shore up binding or dealt the version. The second is from John G. Kidd & Son, Cincinnati, OH.Kidd & Son was a venerable Cincinnati bookstore that opened in the mid-19th century. Cover boards measure 12" x 19".
Condition
Some losses to cover boards, and craquelure, toning to pages, coloring appears later, some previous holes from binding no longer used.
