Description
Randy Leo "Frenchy" Frechette
(American/New Orleans, b. 1970)
"Dreams Come True: Big Chief Bo Dollis", 2015
acrylic on canvas
signed lower right, and signed, titled, dated and inscribed "Official Jazz Festival Poster Painting" en verso.
Framed.
60" x 39", framed 67-1/2" x 46-1/2"
Notes: With vibrant colors and energetic brushwork, Frenchy is known for creating "live" paintings while attending music performances, festivals, cultural celebrations, and Saints and Pelican games. In 2015, Frenchy was selected to create the poster for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival featuring a portrait of Bo Dollis, the legendary Big Chief of the Wild Magnolias Mardi Gras Indians, who had passed away earlier that year.
Bo Dollis was part of the new generation of Mardi Gras Indians, following in the footsteps of Tootie Montana, who turned away from violence when one tribe met another on the streets, focusing instead on costuming and "prettiness." Dollis brought the culture and music of the Mardi Gras Indians to national attention with a studio album of Mardi Gras Indian music in 1970. That same year Dollis and Monk Boudreaux, Big Chief of the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indians, appeared together at the first New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in Palmer Park (now Armstrong Park).
