Description
Depicting the bodhisattva in his multi-arm version called Sahasrabhuya (with a thousand arms). Avalokitesvara in Sanskrit means "the one who listens to [the prayer]" and he first appear in some documents of the 5th century to indicate one of the most worshipped figures in Asian popular devotion, also known by the name of Guaniyn in China or Kannon in Japan. This very iconography of the deity comes from a legend that tells of how the transcendent Buddha Amitabha transformed the 11 fragments into which Avalokitesvara's head split due to the pain that plagued him on seeing humanity.
