Recruitment broadside issued by Lt. Col. ISAAC L. CLARKE (1824-1863) of the 96th Illinois Vols.,11.5 x 8.75 in., Waukegan, July 28, 1862. Clarke seeks to fill the tolls of the 96th, which would be mustered into Federal service on September 6, 1862. It reads, in part: 'WAR MEETING! I will meet the People for the purpose of Recruiting for the War...Each Soldier` will receive the sum of FORTY DOLLARS on or before the mustering of the Regiment...Whatever BOUNTY the Supervisors pay will be in addition to the above...' Wrinkled with folds, a few spots, else very good and set into a wood frame. The 96th Illinois would be engaged at Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Jonesboro, and Franklin. Lt. Col. Clarke would be killed at Chickamauga as he led his men up Horseshoe Ridge. He was shot through the chest in the first charge.
