Description
Circa 18th century. This particular example has some very fine features, the hinged top with turret corners is beautifully carved with large floral rosettes that are all within leaf carved borders. Center of the table has a wonderful arabesque foliate cartouche. When the hinged top is open, it reveals a playing surface with green felt. Each of the four corners has a dish-formed circular space for cards and in front of each player is an oval carved depression for game pieces. The entire top has a carved edge of flower blossoms. What makes this table unique is that in lieu of having a single swing leg that is hinged and would support the open top, this accordion top example has hinged side panels which when the rear legs are pulled out, become a single apron to support the top. The table is supported by delicate, cylindrical legs with acanthus leaf carving and are raised on carved feet which are also with leaf tips. As we pointed out, the table is solid mahogany of a dense nature such as Honduran mahogany. The apron is of quarter sawn oak that has a dark mahogany stain and the legs are also mahogany. The table still has its original early finish, now age darkened to a deep nut brown. SIZE: 28” h x 35” w x 17” d. When open the top is 30” x 33”. Condition: CONDITION: Good. The surface of the table is in need of polishing and as a few small veneer losses.
