19th C. Korean Joseon Dynasty Porcelain Water Dropper
Item Details
Description
East Asia, Korea, Joseon Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely cuboid porcelain water dropper resting on four diminutive feet with classic blue-on-white floral motifs painted on each of the four sides and a landscape on the upper face. A miniature spout juts out from the front and a fill hole is set in the center of the upper face, surrounded by an ocean scene with cliffs, ships, and a large cloud. Scholars during the Joseon Dynasty used water stoppers to wet inkstones to grind ink sticks, using the water to make the ink flow more readily. In the 19th century, fancifully shaped and painted water droppers like this example became fashionable. Size: 2.5" L x 2.5" W x 1.5" H (6.4 cm x 6.4 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Denver collection, USA, by inheritance before 2000 from the Harry Tammen Family collection, former owner of the Denver Post
