Description
EDWARD LADELL
English, 1821-1886
Oil on canvas
Signed lower right. Still life with flower-filled vase and fruit, gilt-framed.
About the artist: Edward Ladell (British, 1821-1886) was known for his still-life paintings of flowers, fruit, and glassware. He derives inspiration from 17th C. Dutch still-life traditions, where objects were set on a marble ledge draped with an oriental rug. Little is known of his personal life, with the exception that he spent his teenage years working for his father - a coach builder. Ladell is a self-taught artist but is suspected to have apprenticed as a pattern designer to a Flemish textile company in Colchester as a young man. He then went on to exhibit at the British Institute, the Roal Academy, and the Royal Society of British Artists. His works can be most prominently seen at the Museum of Coydon in London, the Royal Albert Museum in Exeter, and the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate.
22 x 18 in. (55.88 x 45.72 cm.), Frame: 29 x 25 in. (73.66 x 63.50 cm.)
