Description
A 1934 Charles Darrow White Box Monopoly Game, containing virtually all of its original pieces. It was sold at Wanamaker’s Department Store in Philadelphia and is one of a very limited number of sets that were produced by Darrow before Parker Brothers bought the rights to the game in 1935. The box is 11 x 21 inches long and the board itself is 20 3/8 inches long, which is shorter than the standard size of 23 inches for most Monopoly boards. This item contains rice paper packaging for several of the pieces, and the original metal dice that came with the set. The back of the game board is black and the game has the original Monopoly rules inside. The properties on the game board have no prices on them, and the spaces designated for the Chance and Community Chest cards are white. Baltic and Mediterranean Avenues are in red, rather than in maroon like modern-day sets. The uneven cuts of the Chance and Community Chest cards also attest to the hand-made nature of this set. The box has some tape at the outside corners of the box, but in general, the cards and game board and game pieces are in very good condition; the cards are still crisp and flat, with sharp corners, and the game and box are protected by a clear acrylic case. The houses and hotels are made of wood. The dice are metal.
