Item Details
Description
Saite Period, 26th Dynasty, Ca. 664-525 BC An ancient Egyptian light blue glazed faience funerary pectoral scarab with detachable wings, formed in a vivid blue glazed faience. The body is oval with a gently rounded upper side detailing the clypeus, prothorax and wings. This scarab has wonderfully moulded morphological features in a conventionalised representation of scaraboid beetle. The underside is flat and there are small pierced holes around the edge in order to attach wings.Although amuletic scarabs were found in tombs as part the dead's personal effects, generally they had no association with ancient Egyptian funerary practices. For similar see: Florence, D. F; Gifts of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Faience, p. 150, no. 158.Size: L:103mm / W:71mm ; 128.82g Provenance: From a London private family collection, formerly acquired on the UK art market in the 1960s - 1970s; then passed by descent.
