Turkey.- Ottoman Empire.- Gomez (Madame de) The Life of Osman the Great, Emperor of the Turks, 2 vol., first English edition, translated by John Williams, woodcut head-pieces and initials, some very light browning, spotting, heavier to vol. 1, contemporary calf with red morocco label to spine, upper joints cracked, rubbed, [Atabey 968 (French edition); not in Blackmer], 12mo, for J. Hazard, et al., 1735.
⁂ Rare; not seen at auction for 50 years. First published in French in Amsterdam, 1734. Madeleine-Angélique de Gomez (1684-1770) was a French author and playwright of some contemporary acclaim, with other of her novels also being translated from the French. She turned to writing to help find financial security in the face of her Spanish nobleman husband's debts.
