Item Details
Description
Gothic novel.- Tales of Terror, first edition, additional engraved vignette title, hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 2 hand-coloured plates, advertisement f. at end, bookplate and book-label to pastedown, later half morocco, extremities lightly rubbed, worse to joints, spine gilt in compartments, lightly faded and rubbed but still overall an attractive copy, t.e.g., others uncut, [Summers, Gothic p.525], 8vo, printed by W. Bulmer & Co. for J.Bell, 1801.

⁂ A wonderfully macabre work, initially attributed to Matthew Lewis but now assumed to be a parody of his work. "The book is gruesome and in its illustrations even disgusting and it seems impossible that Lewis could have had anything to do with it. Some of the ballads are too coarse and grotesque to stand comparison with any work by M. G. Lewis." - Montague Summers, A Gothic Bibliography.

Provenance: Bookplate of of Sir Charles Tennant (1823-1906), first Baronet, businessman and Liberal politician; also book-label of John Delaware Lewis MP (1828-84), Liberal politician.
