This work is related to Maurice-Quentin de La Tour s pastel portrait of the dauphine Marie-Josephe de Saxe (1731-67) which was exhibited at the Salon of 1761, no. 47, now Inv. 27623, Musee du Louvre.

The sitter is shown wearing court dress, a medallion of St. John Nepomucene which is suspended from a red ribbon, and the Order of the Starry Cross which is suspended from a black ribbon. In lot 189, the dauphine's necklace of large pearls is substituted with a blue choker.

The Abbe de Murat was nominated as the aumonier of the dauphine in 1754.
