Description
Native American, Arctic, Inuit or Aleut peoples, ca. 1500 to 1800 CE. A sturdy utilitarian axe head that is hand-carved from dark gray-brown stone. The ovoid tool features a rounded butt end, a carved groove across the top for gripping, and a tapered blade head with a downward-facing edge. Smooth surfaces along the upper and lower peripheries of the blade edge suggest how this tool was used regularly for everyday tasks. Size: 6.125" L x 1.625" W (15.6 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania collection, USA; ex-Mr. & Mrs. Michael F. McLeod collection, before 2000

Losses to areas of butt and blade edge as shown. Minor abrasions and pitting across surfaces, with light encrustations within some recessed areas. Nice surface smoothness along blade head. Old MacLeod inventory label on side of blade head.
