Sterling Silver & Roman Glass Pendant w/ Iridescence
Sterling Silver & Roman Glass Pendant w/ Iridescence
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous sterling silver pendant constructed with the repurposed base of a Roman glass vessel, perhaps a drinking cup or a beaker. The glass pendant is of rough ovoid form with a central kick surrounded by uneven walls with slightly sharp edges, and a rough pontil scar is on the verso. The standout feature of this pendant is the stunning windswept iridescence that presents in a myriad of rainbow hues. A wearable example of ancient beauty! Size (glass pendant): 1.7" W x 1.8" H (4.3 cm x 4.6 cm); (cord): 2" L (55.9 cm); sterling silver quality: 92.5% or higher; weight: 18.4 grams

Provenance: ex-Sedona, Arizona, USA collection

#170027
Condition
Wearable as shown and constructed in modern times. Roman glass fragment is ancient; necklace cord and sterling silver setting are modern. Edges around central kick as well as pontil scar are rather sharp to the touch. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. The verso of the suspension bale has "925" stamped below an indiscernible logo.
