Description
The lot includes a large brass bookend depicting a sailing galleon ship on a rectangular base, one bookend depicting a grazing horse, a pair of metal bookends with sailing ships, and a pair of gilt brass bookends after the marble originals for the tomb of Clement XIII St. Peter's Basilica, Antonio Canova, Italian, 1757 to 1822. The bookends are made in the shape of a lion lying on a pedestal. Bears an incised inscription on the pedestal. Antonio Canova was an Italian Neoclassical sculptor, famous for his marble sculptures. Often regarded as the greatest of the Neoclassical artists, his sculpture was inspired by the Baroque and the classical revival and has been characterized as having avoided the melodramatics of the former, and the cold artificiality of the latter.
