Description
This is a very rare and delicate piece that it is a 230 year old publication. To have the oppertunity to own such a rare piece signed by Thomas Paine will certainly appeal to the most descriminating collector of historical documents. Thomas Paine, February 9, 1737 – June 8, 1809) was an influential 18th-century writer of essays and pamphlets. Among them were "The Age of Reason"; regarding the place of religion in society; "Rights of Man," a piece defending the French Revolution; and "Common Sense," which was published during the American Revolution. "Common Sense," Paine's most influential piece, brought his ideas to a vast audience, swaying the otherwise undecided public opinion to the view that independence from the British was a necessity. His writings influenced the American Revolution and helped pave the way for the Declaration of Independence. The Columbian was the best illustrated magazine of the century, started in September 1786 by a handful of men, including Matthew Carey; John Trenchard, an engraver who contributed two copperplate engravings for each number and Charles Cist, a Russian immigrant who went on to establish the government printing office. The magazine’s name was changed in 1790 to Universal Asylum. Up for auction is an extremely rare edition of the magazine featuring both names, "Universal Asylum and Columbian Magazine". The July 1792 edition featured extracts from Thomas Paine's "Right's of Man Part II". This item has been authenticated by Autograph Certification Experts and comes with their Letter of Authenticity.
