'I'm all for drawing' – Sergeant (Hazlitt 1996)

A great British draughtsmen of the twentieth century, John Sergeant's work is instantly recognisable for his interest in, and respect of, the everyday object. Beginning his studies at Canterbury College of Art he then entered the Royal Academy Schools (1959-62) where he subsequently won the Drawing Prize in his final year. Trawling through auction rooms and antique shops for subject matter, Sergeant would chance upon forgotten pieces such as the toy horses in the present Lot. Returning to the studio he would, literally, draw inspiration from masters such as Chardin and Rembrandt to elevate his subjects to new heights.
