Note: First edition of the first novel set and written in Canada. Brooke was in Quebec between 1763 and 1767, accompanying her husband who was chaplain to the British garrison. 'In the late eighteenth century the work also became a kind of guidebook for visitors to Quebec' (ODNB). Provenance: The Hon. George Baillie (c.1721-1797; ownership inscription to title-pages, engraved armorial bookplate of his antecedent George Ballie to front pastedowns, armorial binding); thence by descent to the Earls of Haddington.
