A blue glazed ceramic figure of a ram
North West Iran, circa 8th Century B.C.
The recumbent ram with curved notched horns and large elliptical eyes, the legs tucked neatly beneath the body, the whole resting on an integral rectangular plinth with scrolled ends, each pierced horizontally for attachment, 14.7cm long, 11.6cm high

The style of this ram shares similarities with an unglazed ceramic bull, probably from Susa, see Shinji Fukai, Ceramics of Ancient Persia, New York & Tokyo, 1981, fig.58,, no.5, illus front cover, where it notes it is reminiscent of ornaments used on column tops from the Achaemenid Dynasty and was probably placed on a peg used to decorate a wall surface or something similar.
