A Canaanite bronze figure of Baal
Circa 1400-1200 B.C.
The Semitic weather god depicted striding with the left leg forward, both arms held out in front with clenched fists clasping an object which is now missing, wearing a tall conical headdress, with deeply recessed eyes, 11.3cm high

Ferdinand Seiler (b.1890) Collection, originally acquired in Beriut between 1935-1939 when he worked there as a diplomat in the German Embassy.
By descent to his son Professor Dr. Hellmut Seiler, Tübingen, Germany (1930-2018), by descent to family members.
The worship of Baal was linked to the economy, which depended on the regularity of rainfall in order to flourish.
