Description
EDITTA SHERMAN (1912-2013) Vintage photographs of Gertrude Lawrence and Judith Anderson.
Two vintage gelatin silver prints, both 17 x 14 inches (43 x 35.5. cm) and with Sherman's "Carnegie Hall" backstamps. Both with surface wear.
Two posed studio portraits by the "Duchess of Carnegie Hall" Editta Sherman who lived and worked in Carnegie Hall Artist Studios for over 60 years. Sherman moved into Carnegie Hall in 1949, thus this image of Gertrude Lawrence dates from early in her tenure as the star died in 1952. Facing eviction in 2010, Sherman became an icon for renter's rights and affordable housing for the elderly.
