Description
COLE PORTER (1891-1964) Typed letter signed to Warner Brothers with humorous permission to use his name in a film.
No place: 18 July 1949. A one page typed note signed in ink "Cole Porter" on one sheet, the letter addressed to Warner Bros. in Burbank, CA. 9 3/4 x 8 inches (24 x 20 cm); framed with a large portrait. Usual folds and creases, does not appear laid down, unexamined out of frame.
A funny letter from Cole Porter to studio execs at Warner Brothers, allowing them to use his name in the film Always Leave them Laughing, for which he provided the song "Miss Otis Regrets" performed by Milton Berle. In the letter, Porter suggests to drop his name in a scene in the film: as an audience files into a theater to see the Kip Cooper (Berle), a nobody comic, a man says "You see who's here? Cole Porter -- Vinton Freedley -- George Abbot -- going be a tough audience." A second man asks "Who's this Kip Cooper?" The first replies "Plays the hotel circuit." And the second man says "He should have quit while he was eating!"
