Provenance: This is from the private estate of a art collector in Chicago. He spent decades collecting but did not spend money having his collection authenticated. A key figure in the Cuban Vanguardia movement, painter Amelia Peláez was one of Latin America’s foremost modern artists. Her work was included in the landmark 1944 exhibition “Modern Cuban Painters at the Museum of Modern Art; she also represented Cuba at the 1951 São Paulo Bienal and at the Venice Biennale the following year. After receiving her degree from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in 1924, Peláez received grants to study at the Art Students League in New York and to travel to Paris, where she came into contact with Cubism, Constructivism, and other European avant-garde modernist movements. Upon her return to Cuba, Peláez exhibited alongside fellow modernist painters Victor Manuel Garci??­a Valdés and Carlos Enriquez in the first National Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture in 1935, which helped popularize avant-garde art in Cuba. Peláez’s paintings integrated European artistic styles with the tropical motifs and baroque architecture of Cuban iconography, often deriving inspiration from her family’s home in Havana.
