Rudolph Carl Gorman was a renowned Navajo artist born in Chinle, Arizona. Referred to as the "Picasso of the American Indian artists", he was at the forefront of the recognition of Native American art into the mainstream establishment. In 1968, he opened the first Native American owned gallery, located in Taos (New Mexico). In 1973, his work was shown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Masterworks from the Museum of the American Indian", where he was the only living artist exhibited. He is primarily known for his depictions of Native American women, characterized by fluid lines and bright colors. As the first recipient of the Navajo Tribal Council, he studied art at Mexico City College. While there, he was influenced by the work of Mexico's social realists, inspiring him to leave abstraction in favor of realism.
