Wilfed L. Kihn (1898-1957) was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1898. He studied under Homer Boss and Winold Reiss as a member of the Art Students League before beginning his career as a portrait artist. Motivated by the urge to document what he viewed as disappearing Native American cultures, he traveled around the continental United States, visiting various Native American tribes. His work can be found in museums and private collections across the country, such as the McCord Museum and the Davison Art Center Gallery at Wesleyan University. His work has also been studied in a variety of works investigating the role of European depictions of Native Americans and their role in popular culture.
