It is now located on the Piazza Pietro d'Illiria. By repute when purchased- this example may have been removed from the facade of a Palace (Palazzo) in Campo Santa Margerita in Venice.Please note, the cataloguing for this lot has been updated and now reads: "AFTER BARTOLOMEO BASSI, A MONUMENTAL 'VERONA' MARBLE MASCARON OF POSEIDON, ITALIAN, 20TH CENTURY, Possibly carved by Giovanni Rizzardi, with decorative strengthening colour washes" and not as printed in the catalogue.

From close examination it would seem that the stone has been given decorative washes- to emphasise and produce the suggestion of richer colouring to the surface. Additionally there is further wash to the reverse to give suggestion of greater age. There is some surface wear- mild scuffs and abrasions which are not evident from 6 feet away. The piece is monumentally heavy- and fixes to the frame with inset large screws and bolts.
