RARE ROCKBRIDGE CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA CAST-IRON FIREBACK, depicting an angel with two banners "Be Liberty Thine" and "Halbert & Moses McCluer", and with "WD", possibly for William Daugherty, in the upper right corner and with four heads. 1792-1796. 31" H, 33" W.
Literature: See Crawford/Lyle - Rockbridge County Artists & Artisans, p. 156-157, closely parallels a fireback that resided at Mulberry Hill plantation, west of Lexington, Virginia.
Provenance: Descended in the Cabell family of Nelson Co., VA.
Catalogue Note: The present lot is the third example from the McCluer Furnace, however, this being one of two bearing the floating heads. All three examples have the Daugherty markings.
