AMERICAN SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) FOLK ART FARMSTEAD PAINTING, oil on canvas, depicting a white-painted, clapboard farm house with center brick chimney, a woman standing on steps beside the cellar entrance, and a small barn with attached shed, a farmer carrying feed to the chickens in the yard, wagons parked under the back shed, a small hand-dug well to right with well buckets, all surrounded by a dirt road to front, trees, stone wall across the back, and a small stream to left. Signed "C. Salmon / 1895" lower right. Stretcher with "OCT 7 84" stamped patent date. Housed in a period molded, giltwood frame. Reportedly a Kentucky scene. Circa 1895. 21 3/4" x 29 1/2" sight, 26 1/2" x 34 1/2" OA.

Catalogue Note: When this painting was purchased it was said to be a rural Kentucky scene. The Salmon family is well represented in Kentucky during this period, and there are a number of residents named Catherine Salmon who are possible candidates as the artist. Further research is needed.
