While on a trip to Rhode Island in 1806, however, he met up with John Trumbull and Gilbert Stuart, an occasion that rekindled his interest in art. William Cattell (d.1842) is recorded in the 1820 U.S. Census living on a plantation in St. Andrews, Charleston, South Carolina. His household at the time included 60 enslaved persons. Charles Fraser's account book includes a record for a portrait of "Wm. Cattell" done in 1820.
