Description
FINE COLONIAL-ERA NATIVE AMERICAN SPONTOON TOMAHAWK, French-style blade of thin tapered form with punched dots along the lower edges and two up-curled side flanges, likely original hickory haft with brass tacks at forend, top edge under head, and to edges of butt. Probably Great Lakes. Second half 18th century. 20 1/4" LOA, head 7 5/8" L, blade 6" L.

Provenance: Property from an important West Coast private collection.
Ex-collection of David and Barbara Lyman.
Catalogue Note: According to the consignor, author Jim Johnston examined this particular spontoon tomahawk on several occasions and declared it to be a very early and rare "Missouri war axe".
Condition
Very good condition with expected wear and imperfections from use, haft very slightly loose. Brass tacks possibly 19th-century decoration.
