Autograph Note Signed integrally ('Th: Jefferson'), as President, Washington, 85 x 184 mm, June 13, 1802, to 'Mr. Millar,' regarding a sermon. Tipped at each corner to packing paper, with adhesive marks.
In full: 'Th: Jefferson presents his salutations to the revd. Mr. Millar, and his thanks for the copy of a sermon inclosed to him which he shall read with pleasure. / Washington June 13, 1802.'
Probably to Reverend Samuel Miller (1769-1805) after receipt of A Sermon, Delivered before the New-York Missionary Society, at Their Annual Meeting, April 6th, 1802 (New York: T&J Swords, 1802), which was sent to President Jefferson on June 10, 1802 according to a letter in the LOC. Reverend Miller later appealed to Jefferson for national day of fasting and prayer; in response, Jefferson pointed out the constitutional separation of church and state.
