Item Details
Description
JEFFERSON, THOMAS; and JAMES MADISON.
Document signed ('Th. Jefferson' and 'James Madison'), a 4-language sea papers for the ship Prosperity under the command of Daniel Fitch, signed by Jefferson as President, folio (430 x 580 mm), Baltimore, May 15, 1805, seal still present, countersigned by Robert Purviance as collector of customs, chipped along folds and edges, some reinforced, docketed to the verso, floated in matte, and framed.

This document allows the schooner Prosperity, captained by Daniel Fitch, permission to safely travel from Baltimore headed to Jamaica. Tensions between England and the United States ran high during this period as the British seized American ships and impressed sailors into the English Navy, events that contributed to Jefferson's 1807 trade embargo against England and the War of 1812.
