Description
John Paterson muster roll signed ("John Paterson B Genl"). Two pages on one leaf, 13" x 15.75", West Point, New York; October 28, 1781. Manuscript document. Docketed. Brigadier General John Paterson endorses a muster roll for the Eighth Massachusetts Regiment at West Point. A manuscript document titled "Muster Roll of Capt. Thomas Hartshorns Company in the 8th Massachusetts Regiment in the Services of the United States Commanded by Colo Michael Jackson Taken for the Month of Sept. 1781." It records the company's three officers, their ranks, and the date of their commission as well as forty-eight (Ebenezer Flint is listed twice) enlisted men, some with remarks noting their enlistment day and current status ("on duty", "At Fisk Kills"). The verso contains a table titled "Proof of the Effective," which lists that only one officer and seventeen enlisted men were present. It is signed by Captain A. Williams as inspector, and Ensign Joel Jenkins. Paterson signed the document as a witness, "John Paterson B. Genl". John Paterson (1744-1808), a lawyer and judicial officer, served as a representative for the town of Lenox at the first Massachusetts Provincial Congress in 1774. He was in command of the 1st Massachusetts Regiment at the Battle of Bunker Hill, took part in the disastrous invasion of Canada, crossed the Delaware with Washington on December 24, 1776, and participated in the battles of Trenton and Princeton, after which he was appointed brigadier general on February 21, 1777. He was then assigned to the northern department and served with Washington at Valley Forge and the Battle of Monmouth. He was stationed at West Point in winter 1778 and remained in New York for the rest of the war. Paterson was promoted to major general on September 30, 1783. His military expertise was called on once more in 1786, this time to command militia tasked with quashing Shay's Rebellion, after which he moved his family to New York, where he worked as a judge and later served in Congress from 1803 to 1805.
