AN INDIAN COLONIAL SILVER TWIN HANDLED BOWL AND COVERROBERT GORDON, CIRCA 1810With a foliate and reeded loop handle to the domed cover, twin lion mask and loop handles, engraved with a crest and on a circular moulded spreading foot22cm (8 1/2in) long813g (26.15 oz)The crest for the SKINNER family, originally of Herefordshire and being descendants of Stephen SKINNER Esq of Le Burtons in 1557 there. During the seventeenth century the main paternal line of this family died out and the survivor, a daughter Rebecca SKINNER married Richard CLARKE of Hill, near Ross. It is Rebecca's great Uncle Edward SKINNER, who died in 1631. He left five sons who established themselves throughout Herefordshire and elsewhere and it is a descendant of these lines that we might expect to provide the owner of this crest on an item assayed in 1810.
