Description
Salampasu - Democratic Republic of Congo Mask Wamulandwa.Hardwood, copper fibres and lamellae.Natural patina. signs of use. . Cm 15,00 x 29,00 x 16,00. This mask characterized by prominent forehead, sharp teeth, paved with thin sheets of copper and adorned with balls of vegetable fiber woven on the head, is one of the Salampasu Wamulandwa masks used during the initiatory rites and for the dances of the secret male society Mfuku.Of obvious expressiveness, this mask has very suffered the injuries of time, since it has come to us with many shortcomings ( lamellae, balls of fiber both hair and beard) and defects (breaking and lack of part of the nose and a nasty domestic restoration in which a previous collector has particularly abounded with the use of vinyl glues). All this certainly affects the economic value of this work, but nothing detracts from its antiquity and its aesthetic value and representative of African classical primary art.
