Description
Thirteen (13) piece Old Paris porcelain tea or dessert set, originally owned by Martha Ready Morgan of Tennessee, wife of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan (plus 1 Copeland Spode demitasse cup, fourteen (14) items total). 1st - 13th items: Thirteen (13) piece Old Paris porcelain partial tea/dessert set, each piece with cobalt, parcel-gilt, and polychrome floral decoration. Include one (1) coffee or tea pot; one (1) double-handled serving platter; six (6) dessert plates measuring 7 1/4" diameter; two (2) teacups with floral sprays to each side; two (2) saucers; and one (1) butter dish with pierced insert (lacking lid). Teacups marked with gilt "X" to underside; one teacup inscribed "1223". All other pieces unmarked. Ranging in size from 6" dia. to 12" H x 10" W x approx. 6" D. Likely French, 19th century. Note: This service descended in the family of Martha Ready Morgan (whose portrait is being offered in Day 1 of this auction, lot #493) to Mary Ann Denney of Nashville. A portion of it was pictured in a 1990s Southern Accents Magazine article on the home of Teenie Bechtel, who bequeathed the set to Mrs. Denney. A copy of the page on which it appeared is available to the winning bidder. 14th item: Copeland Spode Regent pattern demitasse cup with cobalt and parcel-gilt decoration having foliate rim and polychrome floral spray to interior. Stamped with maker's mark, pattern name, and model number to underside. 2 3/8" H x 3" W x 2 1/4" D. English, 20th century. (Note: this last piece is similar to the Morgan tea set but was not owned by Martha Ready Morgan).

1st - 13th items: All in overall good condition with slight scattered wear to parcel gilt and polychrome glaze; compote with scattered minor chipping to rim, largest area measuring 1/4" x 1/8". Butter dish lacks lid. 14th item: Overall good condition with minute hairline measuring 1 3/4" L.
