Description
"Brother" Mel Meyer (American/Tennessee, 1928-2013) oil on canvas painting depicting the Grand Canyon rendered in warm shades of red and orange contrasted with cool tones of blue and purple. Signed "Mel, 1978" lower right. Housed in a simple wood frame. Sight: 24 1/4" H x 24 1/4" W. Framed: 24 1/2" H x 24 3/4" W. Biography: Brother Mel Meyer was painter and sculptor of the contemporary tradition, creating over 10,000 works in his 45-year career. Born in Florissant, MO in 1928, he joined the Catholic order of the Marianist monks at the age of 19, turning his interests toward the arts. He considered his lifelong involvement with the Church to have determined his career as an artist. His work and legacy is well known in the Nashville area because of the artist's relationship with The Arts Company owner, Anne Brown, who stumbled upon his work in St. Louis. Having never sold a work before, Brother Mel was reluctant to have his work displayed elsewhere. Nevertheless, his colorful compositions have been widely appreciated in Nashville ever since.
