Dutch School oil on cradleboard interior scene, after Gerard TerBorch/Terberg, The Younger (Netherlands/Holland, 1617-1681). Depicts a young noblewoman seated at a dressing table in front of stained glass windows with a water ewer and mirror resting on the table in front of her and a female maid arranging the noblewoman's hair. A large room-sized tapestry is gathered to the right side of the scene and a small footed bath with water jug is visible to the lower right. Housed in a gilt carved Hudson River School frame. Frame has placard to lower edge attributing the painting to Gerard Terburg. Board: 19 1/2" H x 14 7/8" W. Sight: 19" H x 14" W. Framed: 28 1/4" H x 23 1/4" W. 18th/early 19th century. Note: Purchased by the consignor's grandfather in 1939 from John Fenning Works of Art located at 11 East 47th Street in New York City. Fenning is listed in White-Orr's 1930 Business Directory as an Antiques & Bric-A-Brac dealer. A copy of the original letter from Fenning states that this work, which he attributes to Terburg, along with another purchased by the client, came from the Collection of Dr. T. S. Hart of New York City.

Professionally conserved in 1997. The report states that panel cracks were filled and some in-painting was done along with revarnishing the painting. The current frame was also repaired. Painting currently has some vertical shrinkage to wood with losses to one area of shrinkage upper right. Minor rubbing and some losses to the perimeter.
