Description
Navy Rear Admiral Stephen Platt Quackenbush Cased Naval Epaulettes. Set of brass, velvet and gold "bullion" thread epaulettes marked "LEFT" and "RIGHT". Accompanying the lot is a framed photographic facsimile of Admiral Quackenbush in uniform, with the epaulettes. [photo: 5 by 7-inches, wooden frame: 7 by 9-inches]. Metal Case is 9 1/2-inches X 6 3/4-inches X 6 1/2-inches, red velour-lined and marked inside TO / ADJUST THE EPAULETS / IN THE / AIR TIGHT CASE / RAISE THE WIRE FRAME PUT ONE TO / THE RIGHT THEN REPLACE THE FRAME / FOR THE RECEPTION OF THE OTHER / NO PAD OR PAPER REQUIRED / 1879. Previously sold as Lot 107, Fall Auction Charleston Estates in 2017, Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Included is a copy of the description provided to the current consignor. Note: According to the website Naval History and Heritage Command, Rear Admiral Stephen P. Quackenbush, U.S.N. Born Albany, New York, 23 January 1823. He was appointed midshipman 15 February 1840. He commanded several vessels during the civil war and during the engagement at Malvern Hill, received a wound that necessitated amputation of his right leg. Later he commanded The USS Mingoe, protecting Georgetown, S.C. He became Rear Admiral in 1884, and retired 23 January 1885. He died, Washington, D.C. 4 Feb. 1890. PROVENANCE: Quackenbush Family By Descent, Great Great Granddaughter. Condition: Cased epaulettes overall in fine to excellent condition, with rank insignia. Case does not close properly as clasp is worn and broken, some bumps and bruises. Red velvet lined interior is in very good condition. Copy of photograph in good condition.
