Description
Exceptional Tiffany Silver-Hilted 1850 Staff and Field Officers' Sword Presented to Lt. Col. James J. Walsh, New York 13th Heavy Artillery. A beautiful Tiffany presentation-grade sword with a 32-inch blade ornately etched on both sides with foliate designs, panoplies of arms and other martial designs. "TIFFANY / & CO. / N.Y." is engraved in the design near the reverse ricasso. The grip is silver wrapped in silver wire, mounted with a brass pommel casting of Roman breast-plate capped with a Roman Helmet. Twisted-brass knuckle bow and lion-head quillon. The guard shows a large "US" on a round shield next to a panoply of arms. The metal scabbard has a gilded-brass throat, mounts and drag. The mounts and drag are ornately engraved with foliate designs. The sword bears the engraved presentation on the obverse side of the upper mount: "PRESENTED / TO / Lt. Col. James J. Walsh / BY THE / ENLISTED MEN OF Co. E / 13th Artillery / N.Y.S.V." James J. Walsh enlisted on February 2, 1864, age 33, as a Lieutenant Colonel. We was commissioned into the Field & Staff of the New York 13th Heavy Artillery. He mustered out on July 18, 1865 at Norfolk, Virginia. Condition: Very good. The blade exhibits a dark gray patina with some light scattered pitting and small nicks in the cutting edge. The grip has a shallow dent here and there. Significant traces of the gilt on the hilt remain. Hilt is a bit loose on the tang. Moderate to heavy dents on the scabbard drag. Some scuffing to the black paint on the scabbard.
