Description
Oil lamp; Rome, Herodian Dynasty; c. 100 BC.
Terracotta.
Measurements: 23 cm (diameter).
A circular oil lamp whose typology makes it an extremely rare piece. It has ten wick outlets structured around the perimeter of the circumference and a bowl-shaped inlet. Because of this particular shape, it would not be an everyday oil lamp but an object for ritual use.
The first oil lamps were made by hand, then on a lathe, and from the 3rd century BC onwards by moulding. The mould consisted of two dies, one for the upper part and one for the lower part. The mould-making technique consisted of pressing the clay into the moulds and then joining the two parts together.
