A WOODBLOCK PRINT OF A SCENE FROM THE AKO INCIDENT
Japan, 19th century
The multi-colored woodblock painting (nishiki-e), with a silk brocade frame, mounted as a hanging scroll, and the jiku (roller ends) carved from wood. Depicted is a scene from the AkO incident, also known as the revenge of the forty- seven rOnin (leaderless samurai), showing a group of rOnin trying to attack the residence of the well-guarded Kira from the front gate. Signature/inscription and seals in on the right side of the painting.

Condition: Overall the painting presents well with fresh colors. Minor browning, soiling, creasing, and losses to the painting. The mounting with wear and soiling.
Provenance: German private collection.
