Description
A Derby chocolate cup painted by John Brewer, circa 1796-1800
Of tapering form with twin entwined handles, finely painted with a continuous scene of a race meeting, including stands laden with spectators on the far side of the track, a more select gathering of racegoers painted in great detail in the foreground, including a lady riding side-saddle and a lady and gentleman in a yellow carriage, the door bearing a 'GR' cipher, with gilded borders, 9.3cm high, crown, crossed batons and D mark
Footnotes:
Provenance
G C Bond Collection
The cipher on the door of the carriage suggests that the occupants could be George III and Queen Charlotte, perhaps visiting Royal Ascot.
