A Chelsea 'Fable' dish, circa 1752-55
Of rectangular fluted form, painted in puce monochrome and in the manner of Jeffreyes Hammett O'Neale with the fable of the Lion and the Cows, the long-tailed lion standing on an outcrop beneath a tree, a group of four cows in the distance, surrounded by scattered flower sprays and sprigs, with a brown line rim, 20.2cm wide

Lions painted as part of Chelsea 'Fable' scenes always have impossibly long tails. A closely related lion, engraved in reverse, occurs in The Ladies Amusement and is attributed to J H O'Neale. An octagonal bowl painted with a similar cat, also in reverse, is illustrated by Elizabeth Adams, Chelsea Porcelain (2001), fig.8.20. Another is on a dish is illustrated by W H Tapp, Jeffereyes Hammett O'Neale (1938), pl.20, fig.47.
